What is the B1 English level?
The B1 proficiency level (Intermediate English) is the third of six reference levels defined by CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Compared to the alternative English language assessment frameworks, it is similar to Cambridge Preliminary (PET), BEC Preliminary, CLB/CELPIP 5, CAEL 50, IELTS level 4, and English TOEFL score 57-86.
The CEFR Common Reference levels are fully defined in a structured set of illustrative ‘can-do’ descriptors for many different categories. The main descriptors for the B1 level also include these can-do statements:
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interest.
Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
